MINIATURE CATTLE

Micro, Mini & Mid Size - Understanding Chondro Status

On our farm we specialize in raising and breeding miniature cattle. Our herd includes both chondro positive and chondro negative bulls, as well as chondro positive and chondro negative cows. Each contributes to the unique sizes and characteristics of our mini cows. Chondro positive cattle are known for their shorter legs, making them fall within the micro or mini-size category, whereas chondro negative cows typically range from mini to mid-size. We carefully consider genetics in our practices, ensuring that we do not breed two chondro positive animals together. When breeding a chondro positive parent with a chondro negative parent, the results are a 50/50 chance regarding the calf’s chondro status.

The Chondro gene, or CHONDRODYSPLASIA, contributes to the short-legged stature of certain cattle breeds. It is important to note that having this gene isn't inherently negative; when managed properly, it poses no risk. However, breeding two carriers can lead to fatal outcomes for calves, highlighting the necessity of genetic testing to confirm a cow or bull's status. Always avoid pairing a chondro positive cow with a chondro positive bull to minimize risks to the calf.

If you would like to be notified as babies become available, fill out the form below.  It will place you on a watch list of people to be contacted.  This is NOT a wait list.  Once babies are born and deemed to be healthy and genetic/chondro testing is complete, it will be first come first serve.  A 50% nonrefundable deposit will be placed to hold calf with the other 50% due upon weaning - typically 4 months.
