Micro, Mini & Mid Size

Understanding Chondro Status

The Chondro gene, short for CHONDRODYSPLASIA, is what gives some cattle their short legged stature. It is not a "bad" thing to be avoided. There is no risk if the gene is managed properly.  But breeding “chondro” cattle can even be fatal for calves if two carriers breed. It is important to have genetic testing to confirm the presence or absence of the gene. You never want to breed a chondro positive cow with a chondro positive bull.  The risks to the calf are just too high.

On our farm we raise and breed miniature cattle. We have multiple bulls, chondro positive and chondro negative. Chondro status is a genetic test that determines the size of a mini cow. Chondro positive cows will have shorter legs making them a micro-mini cow. Chondro negative cows will usually fall in the mini to mid-size range. However when breeding, you cannot breed two chondro positive animals together. So breeding a chondro positive with a chondro negative gives a 50/50 chance on the calf’s chondro status.
